I was delighted to discover the farmer my editor suggested interviewing for this piece was the father of one of my middle school friends. Unfortunately, I didn’t realize that until I met him and he recognized me.

Standing in those empty fields was peaceful. I’m not a farmer—though I do dream of my own vegetable garden—but I can imagine going home for the day with dirt on your hands is satisfying. This story examined alternative ways to break up farm land without having to till.
